How much do you trust Him?

‘But I trust in Thee, O Lord, I say, “Thou art my God.” My times are in Thy hand…’
            Psalm 31:14

Hello dear friend,
Thank you for stopping by!

The three minute meditation below about trusting God relates to my recent bad bout of shingles. It was a challenge but I was determined to stay as positive as possible during the episode - which was quite an experience! I did what I always try to do, and what I advise everyone to do: stay as close to God as possible at all times.

The shingles affected the right side of my head, forehead and eyelid, and then it caused viral conjunctivitis and an ulcer in my right eye. It was rather nasty and painful - as anyone who has had it will know - as it involves the nerves in the skin. Happily, I am well on the mend and also getting my strength back. (It's quite a long business.)

It did though, through my choosing, include some spiritual development. First of all I offered the pain up for the souls in purgatory. And in the midst of the pain I sometimes found myself identifying with Christ on the cross, though, of course, it goes without saying: His pain was way beyond mine...! One night, while trying to get to sleep, I found myself praying. 'Dear Lord, I'm not asking You to take this illness away but the doctor said I needed plenty of sleep in order to heal. So please will you help me to go to sleep. I ask this in Jesus' name. Amen.' And He immediately gave me advice on getting more comfortable. When I did what He suggested I fell asleep quickly. Thank You Lord!

For me though, the worst thing about the shingles was not my personal pain - which I knew was temporary and part of an illness - but the thought of the pain of others stemming from, say. life-threatening disease. I just hated to think of all those poor people going through a terrible time. It was at that point that I told God that I didn't understand why that was happening.

But very soon I came back to: 'Lord, Your ways are not my ways but I know that you are Love. And though I do not understand many things in this life I choose afresh to trust You implicitly. Knowing that one day all will be revealed to me and everything will have stemmed from Love.' As Saint Paul put it, 'Now we see through a glass darkly. But then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part but then I shall understand fully.' 1 Corinthians 13:12

The meditation below was the fruition of that experience. I am sharing it with you in the hope that it will help you - now or in the future when you need it.

‘But I trust in Thee, O Lord, I say, “Thou art my God.” My times are in Thy hand…’
           Psalm 31:14

Perhaps you will agree that when things are going well in your life it is easier, much easier, to say that you trust God. Maybe your faith could be described as vibrant. You may even have got to the point in your spiritual development where a crisis in your life can be viewed – sooner rather than later - as the test it is. But. When you are ill or in pain, or feeling overwhelmed by life, it is human to have a bit of wobble. Even saints have admitted as much. If you are going through a dark valley at the moment I hope that the meditation below will help you circle back to ‘Jesus, I trust in You!’.

1. Read Psalm 31:9-16

2. Sit up straight and close your eyes. Breathe in deeply through the nose. Hold a few seconds. Breathe out through the mouth and as you do so feel the whole of your body relax.

3. Now meditate for a few moments on the mysterious nature of God. Then focus on the fact that though, in this life, we will NEVER have all the answers to the most difficult questions, God asks us to trust Him. And though that is especially difficult when we are suffering in some way that is precisely when our trust is most necessary. Otherwise, how can we prove our trust?

4. Now say this prayer – or one of your own – ‘Dear Lord Jesus, without You I am nothing. So I beg you to be patient with me if I become impatient with a painful situation in my life. Please remind me of my promise – made in a happier time - to turn everything over to You; to trust all outcomes to Your loving hands. I ask this through the same Christ our Lord. Amen’

5. When you are ready breathe in and out deeply as before. Then open your eyes and have a big stretch.

Prayerfully hoping the above meditation helps you through your toughest tests of trusting God.
God bless,

Love beyond romance!

Let Biblical Inspiration Fire Your Imagination!
3 minute reading and meditation

You will need a bible, a chair, and few minutes alone

Jesus said, “…love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples…”
                        John 13:35

Romantic love is in the air this Valentine's Day. For Christians though, as God is Love: every day, every moment, we are challenged by Jesus’ commandment to show love to everyone we cross paths with. We do so by being helpful, forgiving, generous, kind, and so on. Sometimes showing love is easy. But at other times it can prove extremely difficult. Yet we are bound to try. If you are struggling with this the following meditation could give your efforts a boost!

1. Read John 13:34-35

2. Sit up straight and close your eyes. Breathe in deeply through the nose. Hold a few seconds. Breathe out through the mouth and as you do so feel the whole of your body relax.

3. Now meditate for a few moments on the fact that Jesus, as God made man, was fully aware of the potential difficulties His commandment would stir up. That our human nature would sometimes cause a tussle between self-concern and demonstrating the love He wants of us.

4. Now say this prayer – or one of your own – ‘Dear Lord Jesus, because of my love for You, I want to always follow Your commandment to love. Please will You help me daily to rise to this challenge. And please also remind me that when I do so I am filled with joy! I ask this through the same Christ our Lord. Amen’

5. When you are ready breathe in and out deeply as before. Then open your eyes and have a big stretch.

Prayerfully hoping the above meditation helps in your desire to do what Jesus asks.
God bless,

The Spiritual Vibrations of Athens

Hello dear friend,
Thank you for stopping by. I wonder if you have visited Athens: my second home? If you haven't I strongly recommend you put it on your bucket list! It will surely feed your spirit as well as gladden your heart!

Just being in Athens - with the ancient temples of the Acropolis at its heart and the word Theos (God) often on the people’s lips - can take you to a higher level of spiritual awareness.

In a land where St Paul himself preached the Gospel, where churches crowd together and the name of the Virgin Mary is constantly on the lips of its people, it is difficult to ignore the spiritual side of life. That elusive spiritual side of our nature is stirred as the very air itself seems filled not just by sunshine but with the whisperings of past deep secrets.
The spiritual side of our multi-dimensional structure is the one that has long been ignored. The trio of mind, body and spirit has been reduced to the duo of body and mind, it is little wonder then that the twenty-first century disease of superficiality has encroached upon mankind and is feeding off the ailing spirit. Yet in rare moments of supreme happiness we can feel the zinging of the spirit as a palpable, living part of our being. This experience is beyond the mind and the body and yet an integral part of it since we three are one.

To truly get the best out of life it therefore follows that unless we take time to nourish all three aspects of ourselves we are not fully living. And since a harmonious life is the most fulfilling one maybe it's time to give that elusive spiritual side a bit of attention. Perhaps you have never given much thought to your spirit that has been described as the 'essential nature of a person'. And yet, with just a little attention you can achieve that balance and perspective that you unconsciously crave - that illusory 'peace of mind'. And when you get a little deeper into your own awareness you will begin to realise that the very craving for peace was your spirit crying out for your attention.
If you want to nourish your spirit you can send out a prayer for someone else. You don't need to use special words, just ask for what you want with a sincere heart. Norman Vincent Peale in his bestselling book The Power of Positive Thinking says of prayer, "Personally, I believe that prayer is a sending out of vibrations from one person to another and to God. All of the universe is in vibration. There are vibrations in the molecules of a table. The air is filled with vibrations. The reaction between human beings is also a vibration. When you send out a prayer for another person, you employ the force inherent in a spiritual universe. You transport from yourself to the other person a sense of love, helpfulness, support - a sympathetic, powerful understanding - and in this process you awaken vibrations in the universe through which God brings to pass the good objectives prayed for. Experiment with this principle and you will know its amazing results."

Let me know how you get on.

God bless,

Teresa x

Christmas: Nobody is an outsider to this happiness!

Nativity scene courtesy of Advocate Art. Christmas card sold in aid of #Brooke Action for working donkeys

Hello dear friend,
Thank you for dropping in. I hope you are enjoying a good Christmas season. Mine is better than last year but will never be the same again since Mum and Dad passed on to heaven.

As with last year my favourite part so far was Midnight Mass. I volunteered to be a greeter for the fourth time in a row. I find this really helps me to contain my emotions. When you have to focus on giving everyone a warm welcome and ensure they have a booklet which contains all the carols and the order of service your own concerns slip away.

This year though, I got a surprise when our parish priest asked me and three other unsuspecting parishioners to do a reading throughout the carol service. But we  all rose to the occasion. When I had a quick pre-service peek at my reading I was wowed by the beauty of the words. And when I read the sermon out to the packed church I couldn't stop smiling as I spoke. I am sharing the reading with you in the hope that it inspires you too.

God bless

Teresa
Sermon on the Nativity by Pope St Leo the Great

O Christian, be aware of your nobility.

This is the day our Saviour was born: what a joy for us, my beloved! This is no season for sadness, this, the birthday of Life - the Life which annihilates the fear of death, and engenders joy, promising, as it does, immortality.

Nobody is an outsider to this happiness. The same cause for joy is common to all, for as our Lord found nobody free from guilt when He came to bring an end to death and sin, so He came with redemption for all. Let the saint rejoice, for he hastens to his crown: let the Sinner be filled with joy, for pardon is offered him: let the Gentile be emboldened, for he is called to life.

When the designated time had come, which God in His deep and impenetrable plan had fixed upon, God's Son took the nature of man upon Himself in order to reconcile man to his Creator. Thus would the devil, the father of death, be himself overcome by that self-same human nature which he had overcome.

The angels therefore exult at the birth of the Lord: they sing "Glory to God in heaven"; they announce "Peace on earth for men on whom His favour rests." For they behold the heavenly Jerusalem being constructed from out of the peoples on earth. How greatly ought mere men rejoice at this mysterious undertaking of divine love, when the angels on high thrill so much at it!

O Christian be aware of your nobility - it is God's own nature that you share. []

Put Christ back into your Christmas cards!

Hello dear friend,

Thank you so much for stopping by! Today I would like to encourage all Christians to send Christmas cards relevant to the birth of Jesus.

Many Christian friends and relatives have said they do not send religious cards as they can’t find any. The place I buy mine is at the church I go to. So do check yours out as the first port of call. After that, if you can’t find any in your local shops - I have noticed though, that since the pandemic there are more available - there is a list of links below to make it easier for you to get your hands on something relevant to the religious celebration this year.

What it really takes though, I feel, is a decision to only send these relevant cards instead of usual robins and tinsel. Hands up – I used to send these too! Robins happen to be my favourite birds by the way, and I love a lot of tinsel decked around my home and Christmas tree. The decorations sit happily beside my nativity scene crib. But some years ago I made the decision to stick to the point of Christmas in my cards: a religious festival. And when I visit friends and relatives at Christmas and see that often the only religious card among the strings of cards on display in their homes is mine it makes me sad…

You know it would make you feel better to start the celebrations in the right way: commemorating the birth of our Saviour Jesus Christ. Come on, let’s put Christ back into Christmas!

Blessings
Teresa
Here is a selection of the links I found on Google for religious Christmas cards. I have not bought any from them so I have none to recommend personally. But I do read Our Daily Bread daily and can vouch that it is an inspiring read so I’ve put them at the top of the list.

Fearful of the future? Try this for peace of mind!

                                           St Faustina Kowalska

Hello dear friend,
Thanks for stopping by!

The 5th October is the feastday of St Faustina Kowalska, a Polish Catholic nun and mystic who died on this day in 1938, aged 33, and was sainted in the year 2000. Her apparitions of Jesus have inspired great devotion in the Universal church to Christ's Divine Mercy. And the saint bears the title Secretary of Divine Mercy.

To find out more about this saint you can visit, for example, the website dedicated to her by clicking on this link.

I recently found a copy of her book among my late-father's belongings. Dad had a great love of Divine Mercy. Today I began to read Divine Mercy In My Soul, a diary by Sister M. Faustina Kowalski, published by Marian Helpers Press.

Following on from my last blog on poetry I wanted to share one of the saint's poems. I hope that, like me, you are impressed that a saint is but a human being who tries hard to rise above the trials of this life. It it also a good reminder to try to stay in Today instead of galloping headlong and fearful into the unknown tomorrow.

O My God
By St Faustina

When I look into the future, I am frightened,
But why plunge into the future?
Only the present moment is precious to me,
As the future may never enter my soul at all.

It is no longer in my power,
To change, correct or add to the past;
For neither sages nor prophets could do that.
And so, what the past has embraced I must trust to God.

O present moment, you belong to me, whole and entire.
I desire to use you as best I can.
And although I am weak and small,
You grant me the grace of your omnipotence.

And so, trusting in Your mercy,
I walk through life like a little child,
Offering You each day this heart
Burning with love for Your greater glory.
[]

Wishing you a blessed day!

National Poetry Day: Give Him a Chance!

Hello dear friend,
Thank you for stopping by!

Today is National Poetry day so I took a look through my small collection to pick one out to share with you.

Also, though, my lovely friend Jan sadly lost her mum this morning... Yes, it's another one of those 'I don't quite believe it' moments.

For this reason I chose the poem below. And for this reason too I chose the photo above of an angel on a chariot which I took when visiting Rome with Jan some years ago. It seems fitting.

13th February 19 Despair
By Teresa O'Driscoll

What do you do when you’re in despair?
I turn to God ‘cos I know He’s there.

But what about you?
Do you know Him too?
If the answer is No
He’s still the place to go.

You don’t need fancy words
He’s heard them all before.
What He wants from you is a chance.
With me? You might ask. Yes, you!

Just speak from your heart
And tell Him your all –
The pain, the doubt, the fear.
Be open and trust
after all He is Love

And give Him that chance
to let you know He’s near.

And you will find that’s all you’ll ever need.

God bless,
