Want spiritual growth this Lent? Try looking at life through the lens of Christ!

Lake Vouliagmeni, Athens
Hello and Welcome!
Thank you for stopping by today. I hope that you are doing well. I can hardly believe that Lent is upon us once again. today I feel inspired to suggest a new way of looking at life that could enrich your Lenten journey immeasurably.

You may already know that I spent many years in Athens, Greece. There are beaches galore along the coast, close to the city, but one of my favourite places for swimming was Lake Vouliagmeni. (See this link for a full article about this on my websiteI came across the above aerial photograph of the Lake. Here is the Lake from ground level:

Looking at something so familiar at a different angle is quite odd. It set me thinking about Christian living from a different angle.

In my work as author and speaker I meet many practising Christians who, though they love Christ, are so very busy that they do not make Him the focus of their life. Yet He asks this of us.
"Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be added unto to you." Matthew 6:33

If you feel that your life is already too full and busy to take any other Christ-centred activities on board please don't switch off. I have a suggestion: Centre your whole day on Christ by using the following, oh so simple and quick, yet very powerful method which comes from my book Pray Then Listen, A heart to heart with God. (See details below.) It is covered under the section, Give Your Day a Good Beginning and End

Begin the day with gratitude

When you wake up open your eyes, have a big stretch, rub your fingertips together then say your first prayer of the day.

Prayer of Thankfulness
Hello Lord,
Thank You for the gift of a new day. And thank You too that I can see and hear and touch and for all my other senses.
Please help me to use the day wisely.
I ask this in Jesus' name.
Amen.

In Pray Then Listen I share a number of short prayers for thanking God  and for asking His help for specific situations. However, even without those, if you remember the presence of the Holy Spirit regularly throughout the day, keep that sense of gratitude that you expressed when you woke up, and regularly check in with Him to confirm that you are indeed using the day wisely then you will indeed be looking at life through the lens of Christ.

If you practise this throughout Lent, by Easter you are sure to have moved closer to the Lord. And having formed a new spiritual habit I pray you will continue...

Do you usually pray only last thing at night and in church on Sundays?

Do you think using the above method will bring you closer to Christ?

I would love to hear how you get on with the above spiritual exercise.

May God bless your efforts now and always.

Assist to live not die! Disabled and Terminally ill beg MPs

Hello and Welcome!

Well, not long  to go now before the UK government RUSHES Parliament into voting on whether or not to legalise suicide. Well, as another side of the debate here is a statement by Not Dead Yet: a network of Disabled and terminally ill people who are asking you to email your MP to ask them to Vote Against the Bill.

Not Dead Yet believe that, if the Bill is passed, some people's lives will be ended prematurely, due to mistakes and abuse. Vulnerable lives will be at risk. No "safeguards" can guarantee protection from coercion.

They say that evidence from the small number of places around the world that have legalised assisted suicide is deeply concerning. For example, in Oregon - a model often sited by UK assisted suicide campaigners - the latest official data* shows that 47% of people who had an assisted suicide said they were doing so because the were concerned that they were a "burden on  family, friends / caregivers". [See my previous post "Assisted suicide: the slippery slope! about Van Gogh on this.]

Hospice UK has identified that over 100,000* people dying each year without access to the palliative care they need and the Government has said that our NHS is "going through the biggest crisis in its history"*. Against this backdrop, now is not the time to legalise assisted suicide.

Not one organisation of disabled people has called for this Bill nor supports it.

For more info on the organisation click this link: Not Dead Yet UK

*Oregon Health Authority -Oregon Death with Dignity Act - 2023 data summary

*UK Parliament POST note - Palliative and end of life care

The NHS is broken: Health and Social Care Secretary statement

I am well aware that this is an emotive subject. It should be. We are talking about life and death situations!! And let's be clear that if this law is passed it will change our culture completely. An industry of death will spring up almost immediately.

Right to Life UK say this:

SUICIDE PODS TO BE LAUNCHED IN THE UK IF BILL PASSES

You may have read in The Telegraph that the inventor of the Sarco gas chamber assisted suicide pod, the founder of assisted suicide lobby group ‘Exit International’, Dr Philip Nitschke (who the media nickname “Dr Death”) has announced that he plans to launch an assisted suicide service using the Sarco pods in the UK if the Bill becomes law.

A person can end their own life inside the 3D-printed Sarco pod by pushing a button, which injects nitrogen gas into the sealed gas chamber. The nitrogen causes them to suffocate to death. Dr Philip Nitschke has said that the machine can be “towed anywhere for the death”.

Professor of law and constitutional government at St John’s College, Oxford, Richard Ekins KC said, “If Kim Leadbeater’s Bill passes, and if the Secretary of State approves liquid nitrogen as an approved substance, then the Sarco death pod would be a lawful means to assist suicide in Britain".

TAKE ACTION

We need to make it clear right now to our MPs that it is a real possibility that these horrifing Sarco gas chamber suicide pods could be launched here if assisted suicide is legalised. We must reiterate that they must oppose this Bill.

With just over 2 days to go, it is a make-or-break moment. Even if you have emailed your MP earlier on the assisted suicide Bill, it’s very important that you contact them with this new information.

That slippery slope, that thin edge of the wedge, that snowballing - however you want to describe the inevitability of the Bill being stretched the net of death cast ever wider will happen. If that makes your blood run cold, as it does mine, please do email and ask your MP to vote against the Bill as Not Dead Yet  Not Dead Yet UK are asking. Many thanks.

Stay safe.

God bless,

Teresa

Appreciate life like Princess of Wales!

 Hello, and welcome!

Thank you for dropping in. I like to think that you are keeping well, even as I acknowledge that life is not always filled with roses! Today I was very touched by the video message from the Princess of Wales giving us an update on her health. It is great news that she has now finished her chemotherapy treatments, though the journey to full recovery continues. The short film, with voiceover by the princess, is a beautiful seamless collage of home-shot clips and professional photography giving a rare glimpse into this close-knit, loving and affectionate family.

The video followed, the princess and her husband, the Prince of Wales, and their three children, as they walked in the woods, paddled in the sea, and played together during their August holiday in Norfolk. Facing her own mortality the princess has a fresh perspective on life.

It is common for a survivor of a potentially life-threatening illness, or various other close-brushes with death, to feel a new and deeper appreciation of life. I mention this in my book Pray Then Listen (see details below) where I share that many years ago, after hearing of yet another case of that, I decided to follow their example of renewed appreciation, thankfully without the trauma.

That began, and continues to this day, by expressing gratitude for the very fact of waking up. And you may like to do this too.

Begin by opening your eyes then rubbing your fingertips together. Then say this prayer.

“Hello Lord

Thank You for the gift of a new day. And thank You too that I can see, and hear, and for all my other senses and faculties.

Please help me to use this day wisely.

I ask this in Jesus’ name.

Amen.”

May your choice to appreciate life more bring you ever closer to God. I would love to hear from you about this.

New Year? Spiritual Fresh Start!

3-minute Bible reading and meditation

Hello, and welcome!

Wishing you a very Happy New Year! May 2024 bring you and your loved ones, peace, hope and joy! Today, traditionally, we think up New Year's Resolutions, often related to improving our physical health, which is, admittedly, very important. Do you ever, though, consider your spiritual health? If the answer is No, you may reconsider in the light of the great wisdom of Saint Augustine of Hippo who said:

“Take care of your body as if you were going to live forever; and take care of your soul as if you were going to die tomorrow.”

If you are open to drawing closer to God, do you know where and how to begin to achieve that goal? I have a suggestion…

We have just closed a whole year and human relationships and circumstances can get rather messy over a stretch of time. We can easily forget how very much God loves us, and instead, by focussing on our faults and failings, we put up an artificial barrier between us and Him. Enter: The Spiritual Fresh Start!

I cover this in my book Pray Then Listen, A heart-to-heart with God (see details below). Fresh Starts are so powerful and freeing. In this case, deliberately acknowledging that, though you may have lingering regrets about some aspects of your past that you feel come between you and God, it is impossible to change past deeds.

Facing that squarely we can choose today to do things differently.

You could try the short meditation below to, firstly, think that over, and secondly, to speak to God about it all, because:

If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.  1 John 1:9

Meditation

1. Sit up straight. Breathe in deeply through the nose. Hold a few seconds. Breathe out through the mouth and as you do so feel the whole of your body relax.

2. Briefly acknowledge any regrets that stand between you and Christ.

3. Read the above Bible quote of St John’s and ponder on it for a few moments.

4. Now say this prayer – or one of your own – “Dear Heavenly Father, I am very sorry for all my sins and ask Your forgiveness. Although I am not worthy, please fill me with Your Holy Spirit so that I may follow You more closely, from this day forward. I ask this in confidence in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ, Amen.”

5. When you are ready breathe in and out deeply as before. Then have a big stretch.

May we feel the burden of past mistakes lift from our shoulders as we walk in the presence of the Holy Spirit in 2024, and always.

God bless,

Teresa x

St Augustine: Sinner to saint through his mother's prayers!

Saint Augustine of Hippo by Philippe de Champaigne

Hello and Welcome!

Thanks so much for dropping in to read my blog. I hope you are well and that this post blesses you. Today, after recent discussions with friends and relatives, my mind is full of thoughts of disappointed Christian parents. You see, a number of them have children, some now grown-up, who are not practising Christians, some not even believers, and some have become 'lost' to them. Of course, this is a great sadness in their life. Perhaps you too are experiencing the same sadness.

If this is blighting your life I want to give you hope. Perhaps you know about St Monica, the mother of St Augustine of Hippo theologian and philosopher. Monica, a very holy woman, was greatly concerned about her son as he was leading a hedonistic life and ignoring God. Her prayers for her son’s soul were answered in a spectacular way. Augustine, once converted, became such a paragon of virtue that the church holds him up as a shining example of sainthood. I once heard a priest comment on how this turnaround came about. He said that Monica ‘willed it’ by her constant and hopeful prayers for her son.

I have seen similar prayers of fellow-parishioners being answered by the returning of their off-spring to Christ. In my own life, for different reasons, I can assure you that God DOES answer our prayers, so please give Him a chance to answer yours - in every trial and situation you may find yourself in. If a loved one of yours has turned away from Christ, or, for example, rejects even His existence try saying this prayer, or one of your own, from your heart.

Prayer for a loved one to draw close to God

“Dear Heavenly Father,

I love You with all that is in me, and so I dare to say:

Please Lord, please bless my loved one [name them] with the gift of Faith.

I ask this, in confidence, in the name of Your Son, Jesus Christ. Amen.”

If your prayer is not answered immediately, do not give up hope that God will answer, in His own time. Remember St Monica and her years of fervent prayer. I am praying regularly for some of my loved ones who have not yet come to Faith…

My Vision of Jesus Christ: A blessing for parents!

A scanned picture from a calendar dated 2000

Hello and Welcome!

Thanks so much for stopping by. Today I am thinking of Christian parents with young children for whom they hope, that when they grow up, they will keep faithful to Christ. That prompts me to share a very powerful experience with you.

One evening, years ago, I was at the gig of a friend's band, sitting beside his brother, Terry. I knew that he and his wife were lapsed Catholics (something about a quarrel with a priest over their wedding had stopped them going to church). We got chatting about his young daughter. I asked if she was Christened and he said she was. I asked him if he knew God. He looked puzzled. "Do I know Him," he said. I felt a bit puzzled myself as it was not a question I had ever asked anyone before, but I pressed on. I told him that I felt that the most important thing that a parent could do for their child was to introduce them to God. And to explain that He is with them. I said, "For one thing, if they ever feel afraid or lonely when you are not with them, they will know that God is with them." After that Terry sat up straighter and firmly promised that when his daughter was older, he would be proud to tell her about Christ!

After Terry spoke those words, I looked up, and to the right of the stage Christ appeared and was beaming a smile at me. (It was actually the second time I'd seen Him, but the first time was entirely different. In fact, it was the second of many appearances Christ has blessed me with and He looks different each time.) Later, I analysed the scene, but at the time of the vision, which lasted, maybe a couple of minutes, I kept glancing at Christ then looking away. I felt very shy of His smile, as He seemed to be telling me that He was very pleased with me. I said to myself, 'What have I said right?’

I can still, in my mind's eye, see that vision as clearly today as when I experienced it all those years ago. Here is what I saw:

It was as if Christ was appearing to me on a white screen - the kind I'd seen often in London clubs, where they bring a screen down to show a music video of the song the DJ is playing. The ‘screen’ was about, say, 10 x 6' (1.82m x 1.21m) I saw Christ from about the waist up, wearing a white robe. His hair was golden, his eyes bright twinkling blue, his smile white and beautiful. Years later I bought a calendar for the Millennium and when I saw in it the picture of Christ, which I share above, I was mesmerized as it so closely resembled Christ as He appeared to me that evening.

I have prayed about that vision, not knowing why I am so blessed with these visions because I am definitely NOT saintly, or special (we are all special to God, though). That evening, it is my belief that Christ was indeed pleased with what I had told Terry. That evening, those words, seemed not to be from me. I wonder if you too sometimes find yourself speaking about God in a way you never have before. I presume it is as in Mark 13:11 "Do not be anxious beforehand or premeditate what you will say, but say whatever will be given you in that hour. For it is not you who speak, but the Holy Spirit." I am convinced that the Holy Spirit was guiding my words that evening…

I’m sure that you have heard the saying: ‘A family that prays together stays together.’ I also feel strongly that this is the perfect way to instil the love of God into the whole family, and I speak personally as we did pray together as a family when I was growing up.

About praying as a family. If it's not something that you already do, but you would like to, in some way, here is a suggestion: Begin to say a prayer before you eat a family meal. You could introduce this by saying something like: “I've been thinking about all the poor people in this country / in the world, and I feel that our family is so blessed to have food to eat. So, I'd like us to say Thank You to God before we eat it.”

There are many simple prayers for saying Grace before meals, the simplest I know is:

Dear Lord,

For what I am about to receive I am truly grateful. Amen.

In my book Pray Then Listen I have a section called ‘Pray Before Eating’ where I address this issue and suggest adding onto the above this prayer:

Prayer of gratitude for food

Dear Lord,

Thank You for blessing me with the gift of this nourishing food. I know that without You nothing would grow. In gratitude, as I eat, I will savour each mouthful.

At some point you could suggest that, as a family, in gratitude for your blessings, you could make a small donation to a charity for the poor. One of my favourite charities is Mary's Meals, who provide life-changing meals to some of the world's poorest children, every day they attend school. Here's a link to their website:  Also, for more info, please see my blogpost: Mary's Meals Deliver Food and Hope

Wishing you all the very best with the above.  Below I give details of my three books. You may even be blessed by simply checking out the link and taking a peek through, 'Look inside'...
